Micturition Studies in Infants and Children:Normal Urinary Flow

Abstract: The urinary flow was studied in 216 boys and 180 girls, aged 3 days to 16 years. The individual flow pattern was fairly constant. There were considerable variations between different individuals. The ranges of different flow variables at different micturition volumes are given. With increased micturition volume the flow curve showed a plateau in the age group 4-13 years. This plateau seems to be characteristic for children. The maximum flow was positively correlated to the volume of voided urine, as in adults. … Show more

“…Gierup established the relationship between Qmax and VV in boys age 13 to 16 years. 5 Churchill et al developed early nomograms for boys using regression analysis. 18 Toguri et al 19 and Szabo and Fegyverneki 3 performed a similar analysis but the patients were divided up by body surface area rather than age.…”

“…It has been determined that Qmax does not differ significantly on consecutive micturitions in young children. 5,7 Siroky et al were the first to quantify the degree of variation with respect to VV, determining that on consecutive voids an individual's Qmax will vary less than 1.2 SD in 97.5% of cases. 20 This finding was comparable to that of our study.…”

“…von Garrelts' method was later used to construct flow rate nomograms for normal wonien [Backman, 19651 and children (Gierup, 1970). Aberle and Krepler ( 19691 also constructed maximum flow r a t e l m nomograms for children, but they calculated the variation around the regression line differently.…”

The influence on micturition of a 5 F urethral catheter was studied with simultaneous measurement of intravesical pressure and urinary flow in 17 boys aged the maximal flow is related to micturition volume (von Garrelts, 1957;Backman, 1966;Aberle & Krepler, 1969;Gierup, 1970), the comparison was made using micturitions of approximately equal volume. There was no significant difference between the volumes (Student's 1-test).

Rectal pressure was recorded by means of a rectal balloon made of thin rubber which, before introduction into the rectum, was filled with about 5 ml air, without the pressure exceeding atmospheric pressure.
