Migraine and Biomarkers of Endothelial Activation in Young Women

Abstract: Background and Purpose-There is mounting evidence of endothelial activation and dysfunction in migraine. Our objectives were to determine in a population of premenopausal women whether endothelial activation markers are associated with migraine. Methods-Women (18 to 50 years) with and without migraine and free from cardiovascular disease were evaluated with tests of coagulation (von Willebrand factor activity, prothrombin fragment), fibrinolysis (tissue-type plasminogen activator antigen), inflammation (high-s… Show more

“…In a young, relatively healthy cohort of women, strong associations between biomarkers of endothelial activation and migraine were found. 43 These include von Willebrand factor activity, C-reactive protein, tissue-type plasminogen activator antigen, and total nitrite/nitrate concentration and the association was generally stronger for MA. Particularly the role of von Willebrand factor in the migraine-stroke association has been investigated.…”

“…Despite the growing evidence of oxidative stress and vascular endothelial activation in migraine (23)(24)(25)(26)(27), the abovementioned biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction have not been comprehensively analyzed in relation to WMLs. Therefore, our objective in the present study was to quantify the L-arginine, ADMA and SDMA serum concentrations of migraine patients F o r P e e r R e v i e w 4 with or without cerebral WMLs in a headache-free period, to detect group differences between lesional and non-lesional migraineurs, to investigate the effect of migraine characteristics, and to determine the differences between migraine patients and controls.…”
