“…Another step was that of establishing detailed specific zonations of these faunal sequences. Amongst these, the hemipelagic sequence in the coastal cliffs at Zumaya, on the north coast of Spain, became a classical one, by the work of Dietrich Herm (1965) of the University of Munich, for the Cretaceous, and of Axel von Hillebrandt (1965) of the same institution for the Palaeogene. An investigation of the nannoflora in this section (Fischer & Arthur, 1977) led these authors to formulate the concept of ‘disaster species’– the mass occurrence, in the basal Palaeocene, of two species – Thoracosphaera saxea and Braarudosphaera bigelowi which, whilst known from the Cretaceous, generally are rare but now appeared temporarily in rock‐forming numbers – and are now known to have done so round the world.…”
