Milk Polar Lipids Supplementation to Obese Rats During Pregnancy and Lactation Benefited Skeletal Outcomes of Male Offspring

Abstract: Scope Dietary intervention to obese dams during pregnancy and lactation period provides avenues for improving metabolic profiles of the offspring. In the current study, the effects of polar lipids‐enriched milk fat globule membrane (MFGM‐PL) supplementation to obese dams during pregnancy and lactation on the skeletal outcomes of male offspring are investigated. Methods and Results MFGM‐PL is supplemented to obese rats induced by high‐fat diet during pregnancy and lactation at a dose of 400 mg kg‐1 body weight.… Show more

“…Based on in vivo models and clinical trials of infant nutrition, the current evidence supports the role of the MFGM and MPL fraction in gut development [18], brain and cognitive function [19,20], bone growth and remodeling [21,22], cardiometabolic health [23][24][25], and more [26], leading to its incorporation into infant formulas. With respect to its gut-benefiting properties, the MFGM increases the length of the villi of the developing intestine, downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increases tight junction protein expression [18].…”

“…This phenomenon, evident through preferred incorporation of polar lipids into jelly micelles, is of particular importance as MFGM polar lipids are increasingly recognized as key contributors to the perceived health benefits of the MFGM ( 27 ). MFGM polar lipids increase myelination of neurons ( 2 , 28 ), support bone density and remodeling ( 29 ), strengthen the gut mucosal barrier ( 30 ), and more. Although the ‘Supplementation level’ factor played some significant roles, ‘Food matrix’ is the key factor influencing MFGM digestibility.…”

“…202 In another study, such intervention corrected the stunted skeletal growth of male offsprings at weaning and protected against abnormalities in bone microstructure and insulin resistance during adulthood. 203 Enhanced insulin-like growth factor-I activity may be a possible mechanism underlying these changes.…”
