Milk quality and financial management at different scales of production on dairy farms located in the south of Minas Gerais state, Brazil

Abstract: RESUMOThe objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between aspects related to financial management and scale of production with quality traits (total bacteria count -TBC; somatic cell count -SCC) and composition (protein, fat, lactose, total solids, and non-fat solids) of refrigerated bulk tank milk from 100 dairy farmers located in the south of Minas Gerais state, Brazil, by application of a semi-structured questionnaire. Dairy farmers were categorized according to the daily milk production: sm… Show more

“…For milk revenue expressed in reals per litre produced, a higher value was observed in compost barn farms (R$1.507 ± 0.032) than in free stall farms (R$1.458 ± 0.048). However, this parameter suffers interference from many other factors that are not determined by the type of facility, including the subsidies offered by dairy factories for milk quality (PAIXÃO et al, 2014(PAIXÃO et al, , 2017TEIXEIRA JÚNIOR et al, 2015), production scale (DEMEU et al, 2015, and milk price in the region where the farm is located, which is defined by competition between dairy factories and the market in general. Because the revenue in reals per litre of milk is calculated based on the milk produced and not on the milk sold, the amount of milk discarded by the farm also affects the value because this milk is considered to have a value of zero.…”

“…This low meet the regulations are certainly associated with the fact that the farms do not receive technical assistance on a regular basis, as was also verified by PICOLI et al (2015). Small farmers had a greater negligence of the management control and hygienic milk as compared to medium and large farmers (PAIXÃO et al, 2017).…”

“…Os derivados do leite são alimentos altamente susceptíveis à contaminação por fornecerem um ótimo meio de cultivo bacteriano e por terem uma carga proteica e lipídica alta. Sua degradação por meio de bactérias e suas toxinas se tornam incontroladas, se não forem bem manipuladas e armazenadas (Paixão et al, 2017;Rodrigues et al, 2012).…”
