MIMO Antenna H-Plane Isolation Enhancement using UC-EBG Structure and Metal Line Strip for WLAN Applications

Abstract: This paper presents design of novel uniplanar compact Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structure and its application in enhancement of isolation in H-Plane of MIMO antenna system for WLAN (5.8 GHz). Isolation enhancement or coupling reduction of 5.6 dB is achieved by etching out the proposed EBG structure from the ground plane of microstrip patch MIMO antenna. Center to center distance is reduced to 0.45λ 0 due to compactness of EBG. A metal line strip between radiating patches is used for further reduction in m… Show more

“…The single unit cell of semicircle Complementary Split Ring Resonator structure (CSRR) is considered for enhancing isolation in closely spaced antennas. The frequency design calculation is carried out using Equations (1) and (2) such that this frequency is the same as antenna resonant frequency to reduce the coupled signal. The structure is designed using High-Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS), which is shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Various methods have been introduced for decoupling between antennas. By using metamaterial structures [2,5,11] and using CSRR and SRR, various techniques have been introduced to improve isolation; they are decoupled networks [6], parasitic elements [7], defected ground structures [8], and neutralization lines [9]. Comparing SRR and CSRR techniques, CSRR reduces more coupling between antennas.…”

“…For portable devices with minimal space, mounting multiple low MC elements is a challenge for the designers [1]. There are different methods to improve isolation such as Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structure [1,16], shorting pins [2], metalized via wall [4], inserting single split-ring resonator (SRR) in-ground plane [7,14], parasitic branches [7], a fractal EBG structure [8], defected ground structures (DGSs) [10][11][12][13][14][15], single lattice mushroom-like EBG [16,19], a slot structure perpendicular to the current on the surface of patches on a common ground plane [17], and metamaterials [20].…”

“…A U-shaped DGS provides better MC reduction by suppressing surface wave propagation. A U-shaped DGS along with patch array is studied with different distances, and the results show that the MC suppression is increased with the reduction in element distance [10][11][12][13][14][15].…”
