Mind mapping in qualitative data analysis: Managing interview data in interdisciplinary and multi‐sited research projects

Abstract: Typically, interviews are transcribed to enable coding and analysis of the data to establish the research findings. However, where discourse is not central, this article argues that mind mapping is a valuable tool to identify relationships and differences across large datasets. This is particularly useful for large‐scale research projects that may also be interdisciplinary and/or multi‐sited where the ability to transcribe and analyse audio‐recordings is often a time‐intensive process for the researcher and co… Show more

“…These mind maps which represent the themes and highlighted issues, later assisted the data analysis. The use of this mind maps practice in qualitative data analysis was supported by Fearnley [31] that indicates the use of mind map in qualitative data analysis, will provide transparent and broader view of contents discussed in interviews. What were your expectations of e-learning and the use of mixed reality?…”

“…This analytical approach was appropriate to provide structures and mental models that support information understanding of the two data sets (Fearnley, 2022;Wheeldon and Faubert, 2009). Mind-mapping may further be applied as an interdisciplinary tool to identify, illustrate and analyze perspectives, relationships and differences across qualitative datasets (Fearnley, 2022). The visual representation provided extended ways of representing the data and, in Longitudinal case study data collection timeline TECHS turn, the categories and sub-categories that emerged from the data are visualized in mindmaps.…”
