Mineralogy and geochemistry of metalliferous sedimentary rocks from the Upper Cretaceous VMS deposits of the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey)

Abstract: Metalliferous sedimentary rocks, despite being limited in scope, are important stratigraphic horizons within the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Upper Cretaceous volcanic belt of the Eastern Pontides. The metalliferous sedimentary rocks compose a distinctive genetic class. The abundance of such rocks in the Eastern Pontide district provides a basis for study and description that may be more widely applied in other VMS districts. The metalliferous sedimentary rocks generally form layers less … Show more

“…The main gangue minerals in deposits are quartz, barite, gypsum, and sulfosalt minerals (Pejatoviç, 1979;Çiftçi, 2000;Revan, 2010;Revan et al, 2014). Several rare minerals, such as kawazulite (Bi 2 Te 2 Se), hessite (Ag 2 Te), pyrrhotite (FeS), cervelleite (Ag 4 TeS), stützite (Ag 5-x Te 3 ), tellurobismuthite (Bi 2 Te 3 ), aikinite (CuPbBiS 3 ), emplectite (CuBiS 2 ), and wittichenite (Cu 3 BiS 3 ), have also been detected (Zaykov et al, 2006;Revan et al, 2014Revan et al, , 2019. Gold seems to be particularly common in these deposits.…”

“…The ore-bearing sedimentary rocks generally form layers less than 1.5 m thick above the mineralized horizon and are typically red in color due to their high iron contents. These silica (±iron)-rich rocks in the eastern Pontide VMS deposits were first described by Revan et al (2019) as "metalliferous sediments" due to their significant concentrations of metals. They are largely composed of quartz and hematite.…”
