Miniature wide-band half U-slot and half E-shaped patch antennas

Abstract: The U-slot patch antenna, a single-layer single-patch antenna on a relatively thick substrate ( 0 08 0 ), is a wide-band antenna with an impedance bandwidth in a range of 20%-30%, which is about an order of magnitude larger than that of the regular patch antenna. Recently, it was shown that a half U-slot patch antenna, with half of one of the dimensions of the U-slot patch, maintains similar wide-band behavior. The half-structure was also successfully applied to the U-slot with shorting wall. In this paper, ne… Show more

“…By considering all the elements are placed at regular interval, all the elements are identical, all the elements have uniform (equal) amplitude excitation there can be a linear relative phasing between the elements in the two orthogonal directions the analysis is done. The effect of mutual coupling is depends on antenna type and its design parameters, relative positioning of the elements in the array, feed of the array elements (Chair et al, 2005).…”

“…Thus the antenna designers should adjust the dimensions and the position of the slot by iterative trials or, potentially, by employment of an evolutionary technique of prediction and optimization as in §4 is discussed. An alternative version of the U-slot patch is the half U-slot patch Fig3a, which maintain an impedance bandwidth similar to that of a full U-slot patch having the further advantage of the smaller size [17]- [18]. This is due to the fact that the electrical current distribution is symmetrical along the line of symmetry of the full U-slot printed element.…”

“…And, the antenna gain drops to 5 dBi, which is lower than other wide-band patch antennas [4,5]. Some other techniques as utilizing the shorting pins or shorting walls on the unequal arms of a U-shaped patch, U-slot patch, or L-probe feed patch antennas, wideband and dual-band impedance bandwidth have been achieved with electrically small size in [7,8]. However the achievable gains of these antennas are below 8.5 dBi.…”
