Miniemulsion polymerization as a versatile tool for the synthesis of functionalized polymers

Abstract: SummaryThe miniemulsion technique is a particular case in the family of heterophase polymerizations, which allows the formation of functionalized polymers by polymerization or modification of polymers in stable nanodroplets. We present here an overview of the different polymer syntheses within the miniemulsion droplets as reported in the literature, and of the current trends in the field.

“…A better understanding of the interactions between cells and NPs is becoming increasingly important as cellular therapies are very promising for regenerative medicine, especially repair of tissue function after organ damage. 53 Nanomaterials could influence the fate of differentiation of these cells or enable the detection of migration and homing of cells. “…A bottom-up approach to produce films with inorganic NPs is the production of film forming hybrid organic/inorganic polymeric aqueous dispersions; namely, waterborne nanocomposite latexe's. Among the different techniques that can be used to produce these nanocomposite polymeric dispersions, miniemulsion polymerization has shown the highest success and versatility because hybrid polymer particles with complex morphologies can be tailored [19][20][21][22]. This technique is environmentally friendly and allows a better control of the NPs dispersion throughout the polymer matrix [23][24][25][26].…”

“…Miniemulsions are a special class of emulsions that are stabilized by surfactant (including costabilizer against Ostwald ripening) and high-energy homogenization, and usually yield stable and narrowly distributed droplets with a size ranging from 50 to 500 nm [35]. Because polymers can be synthesized in the dispersed phase of a miniemulsion system, at the interface of the droplets, or in the continuous phase, minimulsion droplets can be used as templates for the formation of a micro/nanocapsule shell [35,36], in terms of the so-called miniemulsion polymerization encapsulation.…”
