Minimally Invasive Approach to Gastric GISTs: Analysis of a Multicenter Robotic and Laparoscopic Experience with Literature Review

Abstract: Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are most frequently located in the stomach. In the setting of a multidisciplinary approach, surgery represents the best therapeutic option, consisting mainly in a wedge gastric resection. (1) Materials and methods: Between January 2010 to September 2020, 105 patients with a primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GISTs) located in the stomach, underwent surgery at three surgical units. (2) Results: A multi-institutional analysis of minimally invasive series i… Show more

“…Complete surgical excision without lymph node dissection is the gold standard for localized tumors, similar to other visceral sarcomas [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. Adjuvant imatinib for 3 years is indicated when a high risk of relapse exists; this benefit is unclear for wild-type GIST [ 27 ].…”

“…As matter of the fact, frailty screening it is not routinely performed among HBP cancer patients, however findings from our metaanalysis strongly encourage clinicians to perform CGA in this population, as it represents the only method to evaluate the complexity which characterizes elderly patients with malignancies. Furthermore, frailty evaluations may provide relevant information about multiple accumulated deficits as malnutrition, physical mobility impairment and reduced cognitive performance; furthermore, it may also exert preventive role, as pre-rehabilitation procedures and new developing strategies may be applied in selected patients [58][59][60][61][62]. The oncological outcomes of laparoscopic liver resection in elderly patients with colorectal metastasis were comparable to those observed with open resection, and a reduction in both minor and major postoperative morbidity was observed [63,64].…”

“…It is therefore of fundamental importance to identify and analyze those factors that affect survival in patients that undergo hepatic resection, in order to select and choose the best treatment option for each case. It is important to discuss each single case at a multidisciplinary group, as to be able to better personalize each treatment option, increasing long-term survival as reported in the literature [ 7 , 41 , 42 , 43 ].…”
