Minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins: Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA)

Abstract: Varicose veins are a frequently encountered medical condition. In the era of minimally invasive surgery, several techniques, in the treatment of varicose veins, have been developed in the last few years. One of the most frequently used new techniques is endovenous laser ablation. Fibrotic sealing of the treated vein lumen is the final result. The vein ablation is obtained under local - tumescent anaesthesia and the patients can be treated in an office setting with immediate return to full activity. Safety and … Show more

“…They analyze variables such as the wavelength and energy employed, the velocity at which the laser is applied, and different types of optical fibers. 10 The laser light emitted from the generator causes a thermal reaction in which the laser energy delivered is captured by the intracellular water in the endothelial cells of the saphenous vein. This mechanism of action can be regulated by physical parameters, such as wavelength, method of energy administration, and quantity of energy per surface area.…”

“…5,6 Of these, EVLA stands out for its favorable results in terms of saphenous closure rates, patient satisfaction, and reduced post-procedure morbidity. 3,8,9 In view of the growing acceptance of EVLA as an alternative method to stripping for treatment of CVI, 10 this study was conducted with the intention of elucidating what influence linear endovenous energy density (LEED) has on the outcome of the procedure at 30 days.…”

“…The procedure is ensuring the sufficient venous flow. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Nonsurgical treatment such as pharmaceutical therapy and gradual compression using stocking may reduce the symptom but does not causative. In the earliest 20 th century, the treatment of limb varicose comprises the procedure of the ligation of the great saphenous vein at the femoral junction, stripping vein, sclero-therapy, and the phlebectomy.…”

“…This ablation method indicated to treat reflux both on the saphenous-femoral junction and the great saphenous vein. 2,3 Another alternative is minimal invasive therapy, such as radio-frequency ablation (RFA), which introduced in the United States, 1999. The method used thermal energy to do vein ablation in varicose.…”
