Minimising young children’s anxiety through schools (MY-CATS): protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an online parent-led intervention compared with usual school practice for young children identified as at risk for anxiety disorders

Abstract: Background Identifying and supporting young children who are at risk of developing anxiety disorders would benefit children, families, and wider society. Elevated anxiety symptoms, inhibited temperament, and high parental anxiety are established risk factors for later anxiety disorders, but it remains unclear who is most likely to benefit from prevention and early intervention programmes. Delivering an online intervention through schools to parents of young children who have one or more of thes… Show more

“…This pilot study of a mindful parenting approach meets calls to improve implementation and enhance outcomes for highly stressed parents and young children’s mental health needs simultaneously. Anxiety is the most common mental health concern in children and adolescents, and without appropriate intervention increases the risk of poor educational, social and behavioural outcomes and mental health across the lifespan [ 76 ]. In sum, this study highlights the preliminary effectiveness of a MPI for parents and for young children with clinical anxiety disorders and describes several avenues for future research and practice.…”

“…This approach, with blocking, was used to balance allocation on the potentially prognostic factor of FSM (deprivation) whilst ensuring a tight balance on the number of children allocated to each trial arm (which might not happen if school size was used as a stratification variable, categorised in some way). This method has been used in other cluster RCTs [16][17][18]. The programme for generating the randomisation sequence was written in R software [14] by SB and implemented by an independent statistician not otherwise involved in the trial.…”
