MiR-210 and miR-155 as potential diagnostic markers for pre-eclampsia pregnancies

Abstract: Pre-eclampsia (PE) is one of the leading causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. In recent years, many studies have shown that microRNAs (miRNA) play important roles in the development of PE. However, the molecular pathogenesis of PE remains unknown. In the present study, we performed a case–control study to verify the differential expression of 4 candidate miRNAs (miR-210, miR-155, miR-125b-5p, and miR-125a-5p) in 20 PE pregnancies and 20 healthy pregnancies. The real-time quantitative reverse… Show more

“…All five of the overlapping miRNAs that were higher in PE than control in the Jairajpuri et al 21 data were also consistently higher in the other studies: hsa-miR-650 30 ; hsa-miR-29a 22 , 33 , 34 ; hsa-miR-210 17 , 30 , 32 ; hsa-miR-518b 19 , 25 , 30 ; and hsa-miR-155–5p. 17 Three of the four overlapping miRNAs that were lower in PE than control in the Jairajpuri et al 21 data were also consistently lower in the other studies: hsa-miR-144–3p 22 , 30 , 31 ; hsa-miR-19b1 32 ; and hsa-miR-15b-5p 30 . The fourth overlapping miRNA that was lower in PE than control for the Jairajpuri et al 21 study was also lower in PE in Xu et al 32 but higher in PE in Yang et al 34 It is notable that the C19MC miRNAs were largely seen in the studies that compared PE cases after diagnosis with gestational age-matched non-PE controls.…”

“…Starting in 2011, a number of papers have reported on extracellular microRNA (miRNA) biomarkers associated with PE ( Table 1 ). 17 35 Importantly, only two previous studies verified their initial findings in an independent cohort. One of these studies collected all samples after diagnosis, with the small discovery cohort (8 cases and 4 controls) being analyzed by small RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and the verification cohort (38 cases and 32 controls) being analyzed by qRT-PCR.…”

“…As a potential diagnostic biomarker, miR-210-3p in the sera of patients with Graves' disease and colorectal cancer has remarkably higher levels than that in the sera of the healthy control groups [ 43 , 44 ]. The expression of miR-210-3p in the sera of pregnant women with preeclampsia was upregulated; hence, some relationship may exist between miR-210-3p and preeclampsia pathogenesis [ 45 ]. OSCC tissues express more miR-210-3p than normal oral mucosa, and this finding is consistent with our results observed in OSCC tissues [ 46 , 47 ].…”

“…miR-210 has been shown to be upregulated in response to hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF). miR-210 has also been reported to be involved in various pathophysiological pathways such as oxidative stress, cancer, and apoptosis [86]. Liu et al indicated that miR-210 protected renal tubular cells from apoptosis by targeting HIF-1α [60].…”
