Mitigating Effects of Forage Legumes on Greenhouse Gases Emission and Some Pollutants

Show more

“…While the feed requirement of these animals is about 95.6 million tons, total forage crop production is about 55.5 million tons. When 11.7 million tons of feed production from meadows and pastures are added, the forage deficit, which was reported as 28.4 million tons in 2019, could not be completed [5]. Farmers producing forage crops have been supported since 2002 in order to provide forage crops needed by livestock.…”

“…Farmers producing forage crops have been supported since 2002 in order to provide forage crops needed by livestock. Despite the agricultural subsidies provided to producers, the targeted feed crop production level could not be reached, indicating that these subsidies are not sufficient [5]. Accordingly, studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of subsidies on forage production [6][7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…The amount of quality roughage that the existing animals should consume annually is 86 million tons. The amount of roughage obtained from forage crops cultivation areas and meadow pastures in our country is 31 million tons, and there is a 55 million tons of roughage deficit (Acar et al, 2020). According to 2022 data, the number of cattle was 17 million and the number of sheep and goats has increased to 56 million (TUIK, 2023).…”

“…The annual roughage need of animal stock in Turkey is 86 million tons. The roughage yield obtained from forage crop fields, meadows and grasslands corresponds to 31 million tons, with the deficit being 55 million tons (Acar et al, 2020). This leads to an inability to feed the existing cattle with high-quality roughage, resulting in reduced yield.…”
