Mode-Multiplexed 6×20-GBd QPSK Transmission over 1200-km DGD-Compensated Few-Mode Fiber

Abstract: Low differential group delay (DGD) between the modes of a graded-index few-mode fiber is obtained by combining segments with DGD of opposite sign. Transmission of mode-multiplexed 6×20-GBd QPSK over a record distance of 1200 km is demonstrated.

“…The multimode amplifier (MMA) is composed by 3 single mode erbium doped amplifiers (SMEDFAs) arranged between a MMUX and a MDEMUX, as experimentally implemented in [12]. The SMEDFAs gains are set to guarantee that the launch power per mode at the output of the MMA is 5 dBm.…”

“…Fig. 5 shows the representative core profiles, SI [32], multistep index profile [33], GI [34], and trench-assisted GI [35,36]. Other important parameters that affect the performance [10], (e) Quasi-homogeneous result [11], (f) Trench-assisted [12,13], and (g) Variation of core pitch [14] of transmission are mode coupling [37,38] and modedependent loss (MDL) [39].…”

“…One of the solutions to enable significant capacity scale-up is space division multiplexing, or spatial multiplexing [1][2][3]. Spatial multiplexing increases transmission capacity by multiplexing several data signals in the cores of multicore fibers (MCFs) [4] or in the modes of multimode fibers (MMFs), in which case, it is often called mode-division multiplexing (MDM) [5].…”
