In the maintenance of cable structures, such as cable-stayed bridges and extra-dosed bridges, it is necessary to estimate the tension acting on the cables. The safety of a cable is confirmed by checking whether the tension acting on the cable is within the allowable value. In current Japanese practice, the tension of a cable is estimated using the vibration method or the higher-order vibration method, which considers the natural frequencies of the cable. However, in recent years, the aerodynamic vibration of cables caused by wind has become a problem owing to the recent increase in the cable length and low damping performance of the cable itself. To suppress the aerodynamic vibration of cables, dampers are installed onto the cables. Because the damper changes the cable’s natural frequencies, the vibration method and higher-order vibration method are inappropriate for measuring the tension of a cable with a damper. In this paper, a new tension estimation method for a cable with a damper is proposed. To model a cable with a tensioned Bernoulli-Euler beam, theoretical equations for estimating the natural frequencies were derived. The proposed method inversely estimates the tension and bending stiffness of the cable and damper parameters, simultaneously, from the natural frequencies. The validity of the proposed method was confirmed by conducting numerical simulations and experiments. In the numerical verification, the performance of the proposed method was investigated using 80 numerical models. In the experimental verification, the estimation accuracy of the proposed method was investigated by considering 16 test cases. Thus, it was confirmed that the tension estimation accuracy was high, whereas the bending stiffness and damper parameter estimation accuracy was unsatisfactory. The tension estimation error was within 10% in all experimental cases, and within 5% if two test cases are excluded. The results obtained by the numerical and experimental verifications confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method in tension estimation.

Cables and hangers are critical components of long-span bridges, tension forces of them are needed to be accurately measured for ensuring the safety of bridges. Traditionally, cable tension forces are measured by attached accelerometers or elastomagnetic (EM) sensors, however, applying these sensors into engineering practice are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and highly dangerous. To address these problems, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based noncontact cable force estimation method with computer vision technologies was proposed in this article. Basic concept of the proposed method is to use the UAV-installed camera for capturing vibration images of cables from a certain distance and cable dynamic properties are extracted by analyzing captured images. Summary Bridge stay cables are susceptible to dynamic excitations due to their low intrinsic damping and lateral stiffness. Installation of transverse passive dampers near the cable‐deck anchorage on a rigid/flexible support is one of the practical measures to mitigate cable vibrations. The limited performance of conventional positive stiffness dampers (PSDs) has led to the emergence of negative stiffness dampers (NSDs). Recent research has found that unlike PSD, NSD would perform more effectively in the presence of a flexible support. In this study, the impact of damper support stiffness on the NSD control performance is investigated. Based on an existing analytical design formula for achieving a target damping ratio, the design of NSD for a given support condition, the design of damper support for a given NSD, and the design of the entire NSD‐support system are addressed. An optimization algorithm is proposed to identify the optimum combination of NSD parameters and damper support stiffness. The NSD design is refined through numerical iterations to minimize the impact of assumptions made in developing the analytical formulation. A numerical example is presented for a 325 m long stay cable equipped with an optimized NSD and subjected to harmonic excitation. The optimized NSD performance is compared with an optimal active linear‐quadratic regulator (LQR) controller. Results show that the presence of flexible support leads to a cost‐efficient NSD with smaller size and lower level of negative stiffness. Moreover, the optimized NSD is shown to be as effective as LQR to suppress cable vibrations.
