Model-based control of an electro-pneumatic clutch using a sliding-mode approach

Abstract: This paper presents a nonlinear model-based control design for an electro-pneumatic clutch for heavy trucks, which is required at start-up or during gear shifts to disconnect the combustion engine from the gear box. This automated actuator disburdens the driver and provides the necessary actuation force according to the large torque transmitted through the powertrain. The proposed cascaded control structure consists of a fast inner control loop for the internal pressure, which is estimated by a nonlinear reduc… Show more

“…In [21], an SMC is presented for an electro-pneumatic clutch actuator, then a controller reduction possibility is proposed. In [22], a cascaded tracking controller is performed by combining sliding-mode and Lyapunov techniques based on a nonlinear state-space representation. A similar method is presented in [23].…”

“…However, an accurate and rapid position control is difficult to achieve because of the nonlinear characteristics of the dry clutch, time varying parameters, and other factors [14]. Various control methods have been proposed to overcome the problems of nonlinear control; these methods include flatness-based control [15], model predictive control [16], sliding mode control (SMC) [17][18][19], adaptive nonlinear observer [20], feed forward-feedback control [21], and adaptive Neuron PID control [22].…”

“…The control method of the sliding-mode variable structure of the clutch was presented in the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The control characteristics of the clutch were improved by the robustness of the control method against system disturbance and parameter changes.…”
