Model Development for Scientific Data Curation Education

Abstract: The mounting and critical need for scientific data curation professionals was the impetus for the Data Curation Education in Research Centers (DCERC) program. DCERC is developing a sustainable and transferable model for educating Library and Information Science (LIS) students in data curation through field experiences in research and data centers. DCERC has established and implemented a graduate research and education program bringing students into the real world of scientific data curation, where they engage … Show more

“…Significant efforts began in the mid 2000s, with formalized curriculum in data curation starting around 2006, soon followed by a range of other curricular efforts to build data expertise (Gold, ). Progress has been made establishing competencies in data literacy for critically evaluating, using, and managing data, as well as curriculum for research data management to support diverse research communities, including model internship programs to help prepare students for the data intensive research environment (Kelly et al, ; Ortiz‐Repiso, Greenberg, & Calzado‐Prado, 2018). Exploration continues on core competencies, skills gaps, and data science requirements for information professionals and librarians (Burton, Lyon, Erdmann, & Tijerina, ; Lyon & Brenner, ), as information schools simultaneously work to enrich and expand existing programs and curricula that invest in certain dimensions of the data acumen model (NASEM, 2018).…”
