Model-independent reconstruction of the expansion history of the Universe and the properties of dark energy

Abstract: We have improved upon the method of smoothing supernovae data to reconstruct the expansion history of the Universe, h(z), using two latest data sets, Gold and Supernovae Legacy Survey (SNLS). The reconstruction process does not employ any parametrization and is independent of any dark energy model. The reconstructed h(z) is used to derive the distance factor A up to redshift 0.35 and the results are compared with the given value of A from detection of the baryon acoustic oscillation peak. We find very good agr… Show more

“…The Eisenstein et al (2005) BAO peak measurement has been used in conjunction with other data to place constraints on various cosmological models (see, e.g., Alam & Sahni 2006;Nesseris & Perivolaropulos 2007;Movahed et al 2009;Zhang & Wu 2007;Wright 2007;Shafieloo 2007). The more recent Percival et al (2007a) data have also been used for this purpose (Ishida et al 2008;Lazkoz et al 2008).…”

“…While there are several methods such as principle component analysis [19][20][21], Gaussian smoothing [22,23] and Gaussian processes [24][25][26][27], in this paper we will reconstruct D(z) and its derivatives more precisely by using the GP method.…”

“…the Hubble parameter h(z)) have been carried out before [24,25], from which the equation of state can also be reconstructed. Also note that certain parametrization of the dark energy equation of state may 'artificially' limit the properties of dark energy from explaining a few effects, such as the recent slowdown of cosmic acceleration [26].…”
