Model Pluralism

Abstract: This paper introduces and defends an account of model-based science that I dub model pluralism. I argue that despite a growing awareness in the philosophy of science literature of the multiplicity, diversity, and richness of models and modeling-practices, more radical conclusions follow from this recognition than have previously been inferred. Going against the tendency within the literature to generalize from single models, I explicate and defend the following two core theses: (i) any successful analysis of m… Show more

“…A phenomenological approach to animals is thus promising for revealing relevant facts not only about what it is like to be a bat, an octopus, or a human in a pathological state, but also what we should do in relation to their welfarean issue that is of importance in bioethics. 'Perspectival pluralism' in the sense of Giere (2006), Massimi (2012), and Veit (2020a,d, 2019b) will help us to better understand our non-human neighbours by embracing a plurality of alternative perspectives; phenomenology being one of them. We thus hope to have dispelled at least some of the initial reservations among those who regarded phenomenology as a practice solely applicable to humans.…”

“…In fact, one may even argue that the successful use of such language within science qualifies it as being scientific. This is of phenomena, in which case pluralism should face even less resistance (Veit and Browning 2020;Veit 2019bVeit ,c, 2020.…”
