Model Predictive Control for Dual Active Bridge in Naval DC Microgrids Supplying Pulsed Power Loads Featuring Fast Transition and Online Transformer Current Minimization

Abstract: Pulsed-Power-Loads (PPLs) are becoming prevalent in medium-voltage naval DC micro-grids. To alleviate their effects on the system, energy storages are commonly installed. For optimal performance, their interface converters need to have fast dynamics and excellent disturbance rejection capability. Moreover, these converters often need to have voltage transformation and galvanic isolation capability since common energy storage technologies like batteries and super-caps are typically assembled with low voltage st… Show more

“…However, there is no cost function involved in this deadbeat based predictive control method, which limits its application in the multi-target control situation. Recently, the MPC method with the adaptive search step is applied in DC microgrids aiming to solve the dynamic response issues brought by the pulse loads [23], [24]. By applying the adaptive search step in the MPC algorithm, the evaluated control sets can be reduced accordingly.…”

“…Model predictive control (MPC) is an advanced optimization based control technique, and significant research has been recently conducted to be applied in marine applications. A lot of MPC applications in the marine systems deal with power fluctuation smoothing with hybrid energy storage systems [7], DC-DC converter control for pulsed power load [8], [9], power and energy management [10], harmonic mitigation [11] and thrust control [12]. Not only in the marine application as a high-level control, but MPC has been also applied for the AFE rectifiers in order to regulate the DC voltage [13], [14].…”

“…Energy storage systems (ESS) such as battery banks and super-capacitors are typically used in NSPS for mitigating the voltage and frequency fluctuations due to PPLs [5][6][7]. Dual active bridge (DAB) converter is known as a proper power electronics interface for ESS in response to fast transient loads such as PPLs [8]. Due to periodic sudden changes of PPLs which requires frequent charging and discharging of ESSs, a high efficiency power conversion unit, such as DAB converter, is recommended [9].…”
