The quality of some aquifers of Rio de Janeiro State was evaluated by applying, in 168 samples, the Water Quality Index (WQI) developed by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) in 1997. The maximum allowable values for the parameters were mostly those established by Brazilian Environmental Council CONAMA Resolution 396/08 for human consumption. The index was calculated with two compositions: a) Na + , Fe, Al, SO 4 2-, Mn, NO 3and Cland b) these and other cations, anions, pH and thermotolerant coliforms. The results of the two compositions differ. In general, the waters of Southern Rio de Janeiro State have the best rates, around 70% of the samples within the classes qualified as excellent and good. The opposite occurred with the waters of the Northwest and Coastal North and Eastern Rio de Janeiro, where most of the samples were ranked between regular and very bad.
