This review suggests that the sociology of intellectuals is being converted into a sociology of interventions, i.e., instead of focusing on a certain social type, it analyzes the movement by which knowledge and expertise are mobilized to inform a value-laden intervention in the public sphere. We first demonstrate that the classical sociology of intellectuals was centered on a problematic of allegiance that no longer seems productive. In addition, we show that by focusing on a particular social type it remained limited to only one mode of intervention into the public sphere. We then review two literatures that distance themselves from the classical problematic and that could be integrated under the common rubric of a sociology of interventions: The first literature analyzes intellectual fields and markets. It moves away from the sociology of intellectuals by multiplying the relevant actors and depersonalizing the term "intellectual" so that it no longer stands for a social type but for the capacity to make a public intervention, a capacity to which many different actors lay claim. The second literature analyzes the public deployment of expertise. It multiplies not simply the actors laying claim to the mantle of the intellectual, but the formats and modes of intervention itself, i.e., the different ways in which knowledge and expertise can be inserted into the public sphere.

In his call for more public sociology, Michael Burawoy presents a generic framework to describe disciplinary structures in the social sciences. This model is based on a fourfold typology of knowledge which has been criticized by many. However, alternatives have fallen short of providing a convincing articulation of the social organisation and meaning of the intellectual practices the original typology was trying to describe. The debate on public sociology did not bridge differences in analytical beliefs about knowledge production and thus could not be expected to build a consensual disciplinary orientation. The current paper builds on field theory, organizational sociology, and interview data to frame the practices identified by Burawoy as social manoeuvers (i.e. ways of utilizing and legitimating knowledge) within specific social fields. In so doing, the paper provides a framework that is more flexible, more empirically adequate, and congruent with the sociology of science and the sociology of intellectuals and experts.Résumé. Dans son plaidoyer pour la sociologie publique, Michael Burawoy présente un cadre générique pour décrire les structures disciplinaires en sciences sociales. Plusieurs commentateurs ont critiqué la quadripartition typologique du savoir que propose son modèle. Cependant, les tentatives de le remplacer n'ont pas fourni une articulation convaincante du sens et de l'organisation sociale des pratiques intellectuelles abordées par la théorie originale. Le débat sur la sociologie publique n'a pas su concilier les diverses conceptions relatives à la production de connaissance. Par conséquent, il ne put construire une orientation disciplinaire consensuelle. Resumo: O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar o conceito de doxa intelectual situando sua concepção junto às análises de Pierre Bourdieu a respeito dos campos intelectual, filosófico e jornalístico. Na primeira parte, o texto se concentra sobre o trabalho de produção da doxa, em como se dá essa produção, e em como é feito o trabalho de imposição simbólica de uma visão do mundo social. Num segundo momento, apresentar-se-á o contexto de elaboração do conceito, ressaltando seu potencial explicativo para os objetos de pesquisa especificamente franceses. Para isso, serão utilizados os trabalhos de Bourdieu sobre os diversos campos de produção cultural (jornalístico, intelectual, filosófico e literário), entremeados com outros estudos realizados por pesquisadores ligados ao autor sobre os campos em questão. Nesse sentido, pretende-se, ainda, explorar as implicações que a noção traz para o nosso entendimento sobre o que seja um intelectual. Na porção final do artigo será dado o exemplo de um objeto de pesquisa que permitiu o emprego do conceito como ferramenta explicativa, demonstrando sua validade para a análise de problemas semelhantes em contexto nacional.
