Modeling and Mitigation of Noise on the A23 Motorway Using GIS

Abstract: Rendering at the European Directive 2002/49/EC, all EU members have to draw up a strategic noise map for all agglomerations with more than 250,000 inhabitants and for all major airports, roads and railways. A study of environmental impact assessment on motorway A23 in the stretch between Castelo Branco–Alcains (Portugal), based in the impact of the environmental noise, allowed the modeling the noise variation, which can be useful for establishing mitigation measures. The results show that noise model can be a … Show more

“…Hence, most of the data used to the classification of this WB is compared against good status thresholds with lower concentration values (20-30 of salinity), easily returning lower classifications results, compared to downstream water bodies. Thus, the lower classifications of this water body must be analyzed carefully and considering that no effect over the phytoplankton indicator has been observed in both the present and previous pieces of work [12]. Such dissociation between nutrients and ecological classifications may be the result of the intense light limitation felt in this region of the estuary [24].…”

“…The source of these nutrients could be both runoff from the margins and groundwater [64] and the influence of WWTP outfalls [13,19,21]. There is not much information about the groundwater contribution to the Tagus estuary; however, it is known that aquifers in the south margin are susceptible to nitrogen contamination from agriculture fertilizers and saline water intrusion due to excess of water consumption from the aquifer [12]. In relation to the WWTP, the positive relationship between nutrients and anthropogenic sources has already been reported for the Tagus estuary.…”

“…Carvalho et al [ 39 ] developed a noise model to study the impacts of the environmental noise on motorway A23 in the stretch between Castelo Branco–Alcains (Portugal) and modelled the noise variation for establishing mitigation measures. For measuring the road traffic noise, the authors used French calculation method NMPB-Routes-96 (French standard XPS 31-133) by using several indicators.…”
