In a high-density magnetic recording channel, non-linear effects such as transition shift and partial erasure arise, and these effects limit detector performance. The transition shift can be precompensated by using an appropriate write current; however, partial erasure still degrades detector performance. In this study, the authors obtained the correlation functions of the stored data in the presence of partial erasure under the assumption that the transition shift has been precompensated. The correlation functions are applied in designing a minimum mean squared error equaliser for both the linear partial response and the non-linear partial response, and the corresponding partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) sequence detector, realised by the Viterbi decoder, is also examined. Computer simulations indicate that the mean squared error of the proposed equaliser can be improved and the bit error rate of the PRML sequence detector is also reduced as compared with the conventional one in the presence of partial erasure.

The implementation of high density partial response channels in disk drives has been hampered by nonlinear interactions between -transitions occurring in the write process. It is shown that the degree of nonlinearity is not characterized by the density relative to the isolated transition pulse width, rather by the transition spacing in relation to the transition width. Factors that determine the transition width are examined. In particular, the potential gains from using low moment media are investigated. A nonlinear model of the disk channel is discussed. The dependence of partial response signaling on linear superposition is discussed. Eye patterns are shown revealing the effects of nonlinearites on a partial response system.

Array heads for estimating track misregistration

AbstracGThis paper examines the use of array heads for estimating the data and for providing servo information. A mathematical representation for array heads is developed, and a formula for the maximum likelihood estimate of the track misregistration is found.The case where the offtrack perturbation operator is dependent on the offtrack error is considered. This case requires a joint minimization of two branches of quadratic forms. Simulation results for a specific head configuration are given which validate the estimate and agree with the theoretical convergence rates. The estimate converges quickly enough for practical purposes in a real storage system. '
