Modeling Framework and Architecture of Hybrid System Dynamics and Discrete Event Simulation for Construction

Abstract: Construction system modeling aims to improve construction work performance by tracking the dynamic behaviors of construction systems. More accurate system modeling can be achieved by considering the mutual effects of construction operations on the context level of the system. Hybrid models of discrete event simulation (DES) and system dynamics aim to capture these mutual effects to provide model developers with more precise system analysis. Although system dynamics models are used to capture the behavior of th… Show more

“…On the other hand, Swinerd and Mcnaught (2012) conducted a detailed review of ABS-SD models. Alvanchi et al (2011) used a combination of SD and DES in modeling effect of working hours on construction activity. Some possible hybrid simulation frameworks adapted from Borshchev (2013) are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…The DES modeling approach tries to model system behavior as its state evolves over time by following the system events, which are recognized as the change initiators in the state of the system [22]. Simulation of a process using DES can provide the value of productivity as well as the project duration taking account of the values of di erent operations duration, waiting times and delays, resource utilization, etc.…”

“…In the hybrid SD-DES modeling approach, capabilities of one model cover shortcomings of the other to provide more accurate results for system analysis [22]. To achieve more realistic assumptions, Discrete Event Simulation (DES) was used for modeling the operational parts of the system and System Dynamics (SD) for modeling the nonoperational parts of the system (i.e., feedback); this combination is called the hybrid SD-DES modeling approach [14,[21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…(2006) used SD to improve the overall construction productivity and to analyse schedule changes. Alvanchi et al (2011), also used SD and discrete event simulation to address the conceptual phase of hybrid SD-DES modelling for mega construction projects. In the facility management domain, Rashedi and Hegazy (2015) developed an SD model to analyse the dynamics of deterioration and rehabilitation mechanisms for a network of assets over 50 years.…”
