Modeling Harmonic Impacts of Electric Vehicle Chargers on Distribution Networks

Abstract: As the proliferation of electric vehicles continues to grow, it is becoming important to understand the impacts that electric vehicle charging will have on distribution assets. EV chargers are non-linear, multi-state loads. This manuscript presents a design method for the modeling of EV charging units using a VHDL-AMS simulation environment, per IEEE Standard 1076.1. Voltage and current data collected from in-service EV charging stations were used to create harmonic profiles of the EV charging units. From thes… Show more

“…However, nonlinear loads such as EV chargers can cause power quality issues on distribution feeders, which in turn may reduce the lifetime of distribution assets [12,13]. Power quality refers to the voltage and current waveforms supplied by the grid operator to its customers and becomes a cause for concern when deviations in voltage magnitude, interruptions in power supply or variations in transient voltages and currents occur.…”

“…Woodman et al [12] simulated the harmonic caused by non-linear load in IEEE 13 node test feeder that used to verify the VHDL-AMS model and their effects. In the switched filter compensator (SFC) are used to solve the problem of harmonic distortion network [13], [14].…”

“…In [50,62,165], the authors show that it is important to use the TDD index to analyze the effects of loads on the electrical system. Although a load can have a high THDi level, its effects cannot be noticed on the electrical system, due to their small fundamental frequency current.…”
