Modeling of Fungal and Bacterial Spore Germination under Static and Dynamic Conditions

Abstract: Isothermal germination curves, sigmoid and nonsigmoid, can be described by a variety of models reminiscent of growth models. Two of these, which are consistent with the percent of germinated spores being initially zero, were selected: one, Weibullian (or "stretched exponential"), for more or less symmetric curves, and the other, introduced by Dantigny's group, for asymmetric curves (P. Dantigny, S. P.-M. Nanguy, D. Judet-Correia, and M. Bensoussan, Int. J. Food Microbiol. 146:176 -181, 2011). These static mode… Show more

“…A substantial amount of research on the germination process of bacterial or fungal spores has been published (Xiao, Francke, Abee, & Wells‐Bennik, ; Zhang, Garner, Setlow, & Yu, ; Gougouli & Koutsoumanis, ; Peleg & Normand, ; Olguín‐Araneda, Banawas, Sarker, & Paredes‐Sabja, ; Troiano, Zhang, Cowan, Yu, & Setlow, ). In particularly, gene expression profiles, either in the form of transcriptomes and/or proteomes, provide the means to explore and determine the underlying molecular and cellular processes of spore germination at an unprecedented depth and coverage.…”

“…Conidiospore germination in Aspergillus is a multistep process during which dormant conidiospores (D) respond to external stimuli and enter a state of isotropic growth (I) that involves the uptake of water and the activation of metabolism, followed by a transition to polarized growth (P) and the formation of a germ tube from which fungal hyphae develop (d'Enfert, ; Osherov and May, ). In monocultures of An N402 in YGMB, the germination curve of conidiospores showed a typical sigmoidal shape (Peleg and Normand, ) (Fig. ) and the germination efficiency (defined here as the percentage of conidiospores that achieved polarized growth after 14 h) was 92% (Table ).…”
