There has been a continuous debate concerning the ozone forming potential and the formation of transient products -gaseous as well as aerosols -of these reactive hydrocarbons (Graedel, 1979;Zimmermann et al, 1978;Lurmann et al, 1984). Although it is known from the literature, that terpenes react with 03 (Atkinson and Carter, 1984), OH (Winer et al, 1976;Kleindienst et al, 1982;Atkinson, 1986a), O(3p) (Gaffney et al, 1975), NO2 and NO3 (Atkinson et al, 1985), considerable scatter exists among the measured rate constants for the reactions with 03, and only few data are available for the reactions with OH.…”

The design and performance of a smog chamber for the study of photochemical reactions under simulated environmental conditions is described. The chamber is thermostated for aerosol experiments, and it comprises a gas chromatographic sample enrichment system suitable for monitoring hydrocarbons at the ppbv level. By irradiating NO x/alkane-mixtures rate constants for the reaction of OH radicals with n-alkanes are determined from n-pentane to n-hexadecane to be (k++_2a)/lO -12 cm 3 at 312K. Rate constants, (k _+ 2a)/10 -17 cm 3 s -l , for the reaction of ozone with trans-2-butene (21.2 _+ 1.0), cis-3-methylpentene-(2) (47.2 _+ 1.7), cyclopentene (62.4_+3.5), cyclohexene (7.8 _+0.5), cycloheptene (28.3 _+ 1.5), c~-pinene (8.6 _+ 1.3), and fl-pinene (1.4 _+ 0.2) are determined in the dark at 297 K using cis-2-bntene (13.0) as reference standard.

Abstract-An 0 3 episode observed at Dorset, a rural site in central Ontario, during a stagnant high pressure period of the intensive Eulerian Model Evaluation Field Study (EMEFS~in the summer of 1988, is simulated using a photochemical box model with a two-layer treatment. In the model analysis, natural hydrocarbon chemistry is simulated based on an isoprene-only scenario. Sensitivity tests indicate that local isoprene emissions are an important contributor to local 0 3 production, relative to anthropogenic hydrocarbons (AHCs), during the event.The model calculated isoprene contribution to the local 0 3 production, defined as the ratio of the 0 3 amount formed in the absence of AHCs to that in the presence of AHCs, is characterized by a strong NO x dependence. A minimum value (-50%) of the contribution was found at a NO x level of -6 ppbv for the representative hydrocarbon composition during the episode. At this NO x level, 0 3 production was strongly influenced by the presence of AHCs. At significantly higher or lower NO x levels, isoprene is more important than AHCs in the local 0 3 production.
