Modeling shared information spaces (SIS)

Abstract: Many companies experience that their corporate intranet is getting complex and poorly manageable. We believe that developing a model for the website, or shared information space will make the management easier and provide solutions that support collaboration and knowledge sharing within the enterprise. The present paper proposes a meta model defining the conceptual building blocks of an information space. The meta model takes knowledge as well as information sharing into account by letting ontologies represent… Show more

“…From past experience with developing flexible groupware and workflow systems (Carlsen, 1998;Jørgensen, 2001Jørgensen, , 2003Jørgensen & Carlsen, 1999;Natvig & Ohren, 1999), we have defined an interactive models' approach to flexible information systems (Jørgensen, 2004). Models are normally defined as explicit representations of some portions of reality as perceived by some actor (Wegner & Goldin, 1999).…”

“…In [27] a modeling approach is taken for shared information spaces in order to ease their management and support knowledge sharing within the enterprise. A metamodel is proposed that de®nes the conceptual building blocks of an information space.…”

“…Several recent trends in information systems engineering illustrate the increasing importance of active models. Workflow [4,14], information sharing [22], document classification and retrieval [3], product data management [8], and co-operation support [11] are areas where active models have been applied.…”

“…Flexibility is seldom offered by the tools currently available for interorganisational cooperation, like e-business frameworks [25], workflow management systems [1,4,24,28], enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) [1,20] etc. From past experience with developing flexible groupware and workflow systems [4,[13][14][15]22], we have refined an active model approach to flexible information systems [5,12,16]. Active models are available to the users at runtime, and the behaviour of the information system is partially controlled by the models.…”
