Modeling Spatial and Temporal Dependencies of User Mobility in Wireless Mobile Networks

Abstract: Abstract-Realistic mobility models are fundamental to evaluate the performance of protocols in mobile ad hoc networks. Unfortunately, there are no mobility models that capture the nonhomogeneous behaviors in both space and time commonly found in reality, while at the same time being easy to use and analyze. Motivated by this, we propose a time-variant community mobility model, referred to as the TVC model, which realistically captures spatial and temporal correlations. We devise the communities that lead to sk… Show more

“…In contrast to [18,19], our proposed algorithm analyzes the user mobility rather than the user localization. The user mobility issues is explored in [20,21], where the modeling of user mobility in wireless communication is provided. The authors present a model that provides a realistic mobility model and verified the accuracy of their theory through extensive modeling.…”

“…Unlike the cited papers, the proposed method does not focus on user mobility modeling [20,21] or system efficiency improvement [22,23]. The primary motivation of this work is to close a knowledge-gap in the overall user mobility analysis.…”

“…One of the most flexible models among those in this class is the Time-Variant Community model (TVC) [33], a model proposed to capture the realistic mobility characteristics the authors observed from wireless LAN user traces. Specifically, communities (areas that a user visits with high probability) are used to model the highly skewed preference for visiting locations and use time periods with different mobility parameters to create periodical re-appearance of nodes at the same location.…”

“…The comparisons of this model with real traces show a difference for the contact time distribution. Time Varying Community [12] is another interesting model in which the authors try to model the location preference and periodical re-appearance of human mobility by creating community zones. Nodes have different probabilities to jump in different communities to capture the location preference.…”
