The incessant demand for concrete is predicted to increase due to the fast construction developments worldwide. This demand requires a huge volume of cement production that could cause an ecological issue such as increasing the rates of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. This motivated several scholars to search for various alternatives for cement and one of such alternatives is called sulfur-based concrete. This concrete composite contributes to reduce the amount of cement required to make conventional concrete. Sulfur can be used as a partial-alternate binder to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) to produce sulfur-based concrete, which is a composite matrix of construction materials collected mostly from aggregates and sulfur. Sulfur modified concrete outperforms conventional concrete in terms of rapid gain of early strength, low shrinkage, low thermal conductivity, high durability resistance and excellent adhesion. On the basis of mentioned superior characteristics of sulfur-based concrete, it can be applied as a leading construction material for underground utility systems, dams and offshore structures. Therefore, this study reviews the sources, emissions from construction enterprises and compositions of sulfur; describes the production techniques and properties of sulfur; and highlights related literature to generate comprehensive insights into the potential applications of sulfur-based concrete in the construction industry today.

Structure and physical properties of sulfur with nanoscale carbon modifiers

It is known that sulfur-extended asphalt is of improved operational properties. Binders with higher content of polymeric sulfur are characterized by higher operational properties. Unfortunately, many sulfur modifiers are volatile and toxic. The objective of article is to investigate the structure of sulfur with admixtures of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon and two types of nanoscale carbon modifiers. It was shown that such admixtures lead to formation of the fine-crystalline structure of high uniformity; average size of crystals decreases in order of magnitude. Structural changes are accompanied by notable improvement of compressive strength (the values of compressive strength increases in about 3 times). The practical value of the conducted studies is due to possible application of nanomodified sulfur in road construction.

In the present work we have studied the thermal stability, flammability, and fume evolution of epoxy matrix composites with different types and amounts of hardeners, fillers, plasticizers, and fire retardants. It is shown that chemical composition of fillers has little effect on the flammability of epoxy composites when the content of mineral fillers is less than 45 % by mass. Smoke formation decreases linearly with increase of the filling degree. It is shown that to obtain low-combustible materials the oxygen index should exceed 31 %. It was found that the optimal concentration of industrial brominated fire retardants is 8-10 % by mass. To reduce the flammability of epoxy composites, additive brominated fire retardants in the form of a solution in N,N-dimethyl-2,4,6-tribromoaniline have been proposed. The high efficiency of acetyl-and α-hydroxyethyl ferrocene as a smoke suppressor of epoxy composites is shown.
