Modelling an Interactive Road Signs System, Using Petri Nets

Abstract: This paper is a contribution to the problems of road insecurity in Africa. Due to non-respect of road sign and to the lack of signing, roads have become places of all dangers. It becomes imperative to establish an interaction between the authorities and the offending drivers. To reach this goal, we modelled an interactive road-vehicle-signage system, who locally informs the driver on the requirements of traffic signs. This model having interest only in the event of driving by bad weather or deterioration of pa… Show more

“…To support these functionalities, we also propose a suited model-driven development approach, combined with the use of a specific Petri net class (the Input-Output Place-Transition Petri net class-IOPT-nets) [22] and its associated tool framework (IOPT-Tools) [23]. Petri nets [24] are a graphical and intuitive modeling formalism, with well-defined execution semantics, that has been widely proposed (1) to model and analyze road traffic, at macroscopic or microscopic level [25][26][27][28][29][30]; (2) to model, analyze, implement, and optimize, traffic sign controllers [30]; and, (3) to model and validate an interactive road sign system [31]. However, none of these Petri net classes and associated tools support the complete development flow of such systems, as IOPT-Tools framework does.…”

“…However, these systems are not always allow to assess what is the turning radius of the oversized vehicle, which can be critical and may limit the movement of the vehicle on a regular road network (Sarker et al, 2012) and other specific elements. On the other hand, it is very important that oversized vehicle remains undeviating from the planned transportation route, chosen by evaluating the vehicle's dimensions together with the load, weight and other characteristics, in order to ensure traffic safety and to prevent damage to the road infrastructure (ECMT, 2006;Vaitkus et al, 2016;Kombe et al, 2017;Dell'Acqua et al, 2016; Ušpalytė-Vitkūnienė and Laureshyn, 2017; Pauer, 2017).…”
