Modified Neuroleptanesthesia Using Droperidol and Pentazocine

Abstract: Pentazocine was used as an alternative for fentanyl in combination with droperidol in neuroleptanesthesia and the results were compared with those of the ordinary techniques using droperidol and fentanyl or Thalamonal®. This modified technique proved to have advantages such as smooth induction of anesthesia, cardiovascular stability during surgery, rapid recovery of consciousness and postoperative tranquility, which were comparable to those of the ordinary techniques. Pentazocine caused less respiratory depres… Show more

“…pulmonary hemodynamics; droperidol; pentazocine; fentanyl Previously we reported that pentazocine produced pulmonary hypertension due to its direct vasoconstriction in anesthetized dogs, while fentanyl lowered pulmonary arterial pressure (Takahashi and Iwatsuki 1974). In clinical anesthesia, these analgesics are often used in combination with droperidol as neuroleptanesthesia (Iwatsuki et al 1971). Therefore, the present study was undertaken to investigate the pulmonary circulatory effects of droperidol combined with pentazocine and with fentanyl, and the results were compared with those of each analgesic alone in the previous report.…”

“…Recently it has been used also as an alternative for fentanyl in combination with droperidol in neuroleptanalgesia (Iwatsuki et al 1971). Regarding its circulatory effects pentazocine has been reported to produce an increase in heart rate and arterial blood pressure in conscious men (Feats and Telford 1964;Tammisto et al 1970; Mostert et al 1970) and in unanesthetized rabbits (Fogarty et al 1970).…”
