Modified use of team-based learning in an ophthalmology course for fifth-year medical students

Abstract: Team-based learning (TBL) is an interactive and analytic teaching strategy. TBL is a learner-centered strategy that uses a very structured individual and group accountability process and requires small groups to work together to solve problems. This study served to investigate whether the TBL concept could be modified and adopted to the fifth-year cornea module of an ophthalmology course. Questionnaires (using a Likert scale of 1-5) were distributed to 169 fifth-year medical students attending the cornea modul… Show more

“…Our group and others have studied the implementation of several teaching approaches in ophthalmology clerkships that promote student-centered learning. For example, both teachers and students express positive feelings about the effectiveness of team-based learning in ophthalmology [14]. More recently, we demonstrated that team-based learning (TBL) can significantly improve students’ performance and engagement in an ophthalmology clerkship [15].…”

“…This requires ophthalmic educators to disseminate complex information to students in a more effective way. A number of potential practices that might enhance ophthalmology teaching have been studied, such as integrated problem based learning[13]and team-based learning[14]. We have previously reported that the application of team-based learning to the ophthalmology clerkship curriculum significantly improved students’ performance[15], highlighting the importance of student engagement and interaction in learning.…”

“…2,3 Traditional lecture methods are teacher-centered and discipline-based resulting to students becoming passive learners who mostly memorize course content. 4 TBL, as described in detail in publications by Michaelsen and others, aims to ensure that students engage more deeply with course content rather than simply memorizing facts before an assessment or examination. [1][2][3][5][6][7][8] TBL fosters students to become accountable for their own preparation and contribution to their team.…”
