Modular Lead-Bismuth Fast Reactors in Nuclear Power

Abstract: Abstract:On the basis of the unique experience of operating reactors with heavy liquid metal coolant-eutectic lead-bismuth alloy in nuclear submarines, the concept of modular small fast reactors SVBR-100 for civilian nuclear power has been developed and validated. The features of this innovative technology are as follows: a monoblock (integral) design of the reactor with fast neutron spectrum, which can operate using different types of fuel in various fuel cycles including MOX fuel in a self-providing mode. Th… Show more

“…On the basis of profound technological heritage of the Soviet Union, Russia has a long‐term commitment to the design and research on key technologies of LFRs, with SVBR 6,7 and BREST‐OD‐300 8 as typical representatives at present. SVBR, a multipurpose small modular advanced fast reactor, cooled by LBE, has been developed within the framework of the conversion of unique technology for LBE‐cooled nuclear submarine reactors 9 . BREST‐OD‐300 cooled by pure lead has been proposed as the pilot and demonstration prototype of a baseline commercial reactor facility for future nuclear power, and selected as the medium‐sized reactor of the LFRs reference systems by GIF 10…”

“…There have been many studies Hong et al, 2005;Greenspan and ENHS Project Team, 2002;Sekimoto and Su'uD, 1995;Toshinsky, 1997;Toshinsky and Petrochenko, 2012;Smith et al, 2008) on the design of small long-life lead or lead-bismuth-cooled fast reactor cores. Many of them were targeted for long-life without refueling, the small size for transportability after fabrication in a factory, inherent safety, and proliferation resistance.…”

“…Nuclear power has been a topic of discussion and debate over the past decades [1][2][3]. Since the first nuclear power plant was commissioned in Obninsk (Russia) in 1954 [4], until the present day, nuclear power plants have provided a constant source of electricity, contributing significantly to the diversification of electric power generation sources and to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in several countries [5]. However, their trajectory has been marked by severe serious accidents such as those that occurred in Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima in 2011 [6].…”
