Modulation of Fear and Arousal Behavior by Serotonin Transporter (5-HTT) Genotypes in Newly Hatched Chickens

Abstract: The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) plays a key role in regulating serotonergic transmission via removal of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) from synaptic clefts. Alterations in 5-HTT expression and 5-HT transmission have been shown to cause changes to adult behavior including fear. The objective of the present study was to investigate the 5-HTT role in fear in birds at the very early stages of post-hatching life. Using an avoidance test with an elevated balance beam, which was based on depth perception and… Show more

“…In poultry, increased serotonin expression is linked to decreased fear-related behaviors [ 50 ]. Neonatal chicks with a genotype that leads to a high expression of the serotonin transporter are more resilient in fear tests [ 51 ]. Serum serotonin concentrations have been reported to be inversely correlated to corticosterone concentrations in spent hens [ 23 ] and in rats [ 52 ].…”

“…This is consistent with the decrease of CORT concentration caused by 85 to 95 dB music and noise stimuli in this study. Fear has been shown to cause changes in 5-HT concentrations [ 27 ]. However, in this study, the distinction of the degree of fear was not reflected accurately in the concentration of 5-HT.…”

“…However, in other studies, unpredictable noise, such as vehicle honking, was used [6,30,31]. These dissonant and noisy structures are associated with aggression, fear and defense [27], which may be the main reason for the different results. In summary, whether the effects of auditory stimulation during egg incubation are beneficial or detrimental well depend on rhythmicity and timing A c c e p t e d A r t i c l e of exposure [12,14,2728]. In this study, the music was the complex rhythmic sound, and the noise was the mixed noise of fans and machinery in the incubator, which was patterned sound.…”

“…Glucocorticoid receptor imbalance can change the negative feedback regulation in the HPA axis ( Figure 4 ). Serotonin transporter (5-HTT) regulates serotonin transmission by removing 5-HT from the synaptic cleft, which leads to serotonergic dysfunction ( Cubała and Landowski, 2006 ; Phi Van et al, 2018 ). Based on the above evidence, some clinical patients may benefit from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), whose major function is increase the concentration of NE and 5-HT.…”
