Mogroside-Rich Extract From Siraitia grosvenorii Fruits Ameliorates High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity Associated With the Modulation of Gut Microbiota in Mice

Abstract: Siraitia grosvenorii is a kind of medicinal food plant. The mogroside-rich extract (MGE) of its fruits can effectively ameliorate obesity, but the underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. In this study, we aimed to determine whether MGE can ameliorate obesity by protecting against the divergences of gut microbiota. Mice were challenged with a high-fat diet (HFD) and treated with MGE by oral gavage. Then, the characteristics of the gut microbiota were determined by 16S rDNA analysis. Our findings showed that… Show more

“…Notably, the analysis of differential bacterial abundances in this research was based on the Kruskal–Wallis rank-sum test, which may increase the probability of obtaining false positives or false negatives in this kind of dataset. Elevated F:B values are known to drive obesity by promoting lipid uptake by the intestine and accelerating energy absorption ( 43 ). In the present study, we discovered that the intervention of plant extracts significantly reduced F:B values compared to the HFD group.…”

“…33 Mogroside-rich extract (MGE) is a kind of mogroside extract. In our previous study, MGE ameliorate obesity by modulating gut microbiota 34 and improved age-related oestrous cycle disorder and the decline in ovarian reserve function by reducing ovarian inflammatory stress in mice. 35 Therefore, mogroside extract has the potential to be used as a therapeutic agent for adverse reactions induced by heat stress.…”

“…Siraitia grosvenorii , also known as longevity fruit, is a species of the cucurbitaceae and is mainly planted in Guangxi, Hunan, and Guangdong provinces of China. As a medicinal and food homolog ( 1 ), S. grosvenorii has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and beverages for hundreds of years in China, due to its biological functions, including lowering lipid level ( 2 ), lowering blood glucose level ( 3 ), improving immune functions ( 4 ), and anti-inflammations ( 5 ). The triterpenoid in this fruit have been used as low-calorie sweeteners in recent years.…”
