Mold resistance of bamboo treated with copper complexes-grafted silica gel and its microdistribution in treated bamboo

Abstract: Bamboo is readily discolored by mold fungi, which greatly limits its applications. An effective antifungal agent, copper(II) chloride (CuCl 2 )-grafted silica gel, was prepared by a sol-gel process using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)/3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) mixtures. The elemental composition and the chemical combinations of homogeneous sol mixture (HSM) and bamboo were determined via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectromet… Show more

“…Numerous chemicals, such as metal salts and halogen compounds, have been used to prolong the service life of bamboo products [5,6]. Among them, alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) has been widely used due to its low toxicity and strong bactericidal activity [7][8][9]. The main ingredients of ACQ are copper and quaternary ammonium salts.…”

“…In the field of construction and decoration, the corresponding main products are plywood, particleboard, glulam, wood-plastic, and bamboo-plastic composite materials [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The rich starch contained in wood and bamboo provides the necessary nutrients for the growth and reproduction of mold and stain fungi [ 6 , 7 ]. Mold and blue stain fungi may reduce the quality of wood and bamboo products, especially in exterior applications.…”
