“…This vaccine or similar live attenuated bacteria with designations including EV76, EV NIIEG and Tjiwide were administered to millions of people in Madagascar, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Soviet Union [24, 25]. Vaccinum pestosum vivum siccum on the base of the strain EV line NIIEG is still used and commercially available in Russia (http://www.epidemiolog.ru/catalog_vac/?SECTION_ID=&ELEMENT_ID=476) and Kazakhstan (http://pharmprice.kz/annotations/vakcina-chumnaya-zhivaya-suhaya/) [26]. By the end of the 20th century, these vaccines were rarely used outside of Russia due to their strong adverse reactions.…”

“…In 1936, a subculture of the EV76 vaccine strain was established at the NIIEG (designation based on the Russian abbreviation of the Scientific-Research Institute for Epidemiology and Hygiene, Kirov, Russian Federation) in the former USSR [112]. This strain was employed for the development of the live vaccine designated as “Vaccinum pestosum vivum siccum ”, which is manufactured in the former USSR from 1940 [26, 113]. The EV NIIEG strain has been used as a live plague vaccine for the protection of plague researchers and people living in territories endemic for plague in the countries of the former USSR and some Asian countries and is still in use today [113, 114].…”

“…On the other hand, it is one of immunodominant antigens responsible for protective immunity against plague [8, 60, 61]. Accordingly, it has been used as the major molecular target for immunodiagnostics, and as a principal component of the vaccines [8, 6063].…”

“…This immune response can protect different species of animals against bacterial pathogens, including bacteria with partially altered antigenic specificity, in case of both subcutaneous and aerosol administrations [ 3 , 7 - 11 ]. However, a commercial live plague vaccine created on the basis of the Yersinia pestis EV strain can cause local and systemic adverse reactions of varying severity in 5–29% of subjects with a normal immune status, regardless of route of administration [ 1 , 2 , 12 , 13 ]. Therefore, studies aimed at creating live plague vaccines based on precisely attenuated strains of Y. pestis with superior immunogenicity and reduced reactogenicity compared to those of the commercial EV vaccine strain remain relevant [ 2 , 8 , 14 - 19 ].…”
