Molecular characterization of adenovirus circulating in Central and South America during the 2006–2008 period

Abstract: Background  Human Adenoviruses are recognized pathogens, causing a broad spectrum of diseases. Serotype identification is critical for epidemiological surveillance, detection of new strains and understanding of HAdvs pathogenesis. Little data is available about HAdvs subtypes in Latin America. Methods  In this study, we have molecularly characterized 213 adenoviruses collected from ILI presenting patients, during 2006‐08, in Central and South America. Results  Our results indicate that 161(76%) adenoviruses be… Show more

“…Overall, five HAdV species and at least 21 distinct genotypes were identified over the study period. Species C and B viruses predominated, mirroring findings of other studies of childhood ARI in both developed and resource limited countries of North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia . Species C HAdVs comprised over half of the detections among camp patients, with most detections present at low virus loads.…”

“…HAdV‐B16 was originally isolated in Saudi Arabia in 1955 from a conjunctivitis case and has been isolated from a cluster of hospitalized patients with Reyeʼs‐syndrome‐like illness and pneumonia in Arkansas in 1981 and recovered from military recruits with ARI in Egypt between 1999 and 2002 . Otherwise, large surveys of HAdV ARI from multiple countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas failed to identify this virus …”

“…In addition, we have determined that HAdv subgroups B, C, and E circulate within Peru and subgroup C predominated during the 2006–2008 period [28]. We also identified HAdv subgroup E in samples obtained from a conjunctivitis outbreak in Peruvian Navy personnel stationed in Lima, Peru (Virology Department, U.S.…”
