Molecular characterization of the first Aichi viruses isolated in Europe and in South America

Abstract: The occurrence of Aichi virus, a picornavirus associated with acute gastroenteritis, has so far only been described in Asian countries. This study reports the first finding of Aichi virus in clinical specimens from Germany and Brazil. The nucleotide sequences of both a German and a Brazilian isolate were determined, analyzed, and compared to known Aichi sequences. The German strain turned out to be a member of genogroup A, while the Brazilian belonged to genogroup B. For a primary assessment of the epidemiolog… Show more

“…To date, the genus Kobuvirus consists of 2 species, Aichi virus and bovine kobuvirus (2). The Aichi virus is associated with acute gastroenteritis in humans (3)(4)(5); bovine kobuvirus infection has been detected only in cattle (1). Only 1 report has described the discovery and epidemiologic features of bovine kobuvirus (1).…”

“…In addition, in the Central-West Region of Brazil, many studies have focused on the investigation of other gastroenteric agents in this population (Cardoso et al 1989, 2003, Camarota et al 1992, Borges et al 2006, Oh et al 2006, Andreasi et al 2008, Silva et al 2009). Therefore, the objective of this study, the first conducted in this region, was the detection of HBoV-1 and HBoV-3 in faecal samples obtained from children under five years of age presenting with acute gastroenteritis.…”

“…Despite the limited data in the literature, different studies suggested some geographical distribution of the genotypes. Only genotype A has been found in Germany and France (1,4), and genotype A is also predominant in Japan (5,15). Only genotype B has been isolated from Pakistani children (15), and genotype B was predominant in Bangladeshi children (5).…”
