Molecular Evidence forAnaplasma phagocytophilumin Israel

Abstract: Sequences from the Anaplasma phagocytophilum 16S rRNA gene were detected in 5 ticks representing 3 species (Hyalomma marginatum, Rhipicephalus turanicus, and Boophilus kohlsi) collected from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Mount Carmel, Israel. The sequences were all identical to those of Ap-variant 1 strain.

“…3 Anaplasma phagocytophilum DNA has been detected from ticks in Israel, Japan, and China. [4][5][6] The HGA was first reported in China in 2008 and the first HGA outbreak in China was noteworthy because it caused nosocomial infection. 7 Because HGA only emerged recently in China, the pathogen of HGA has not yet been isolated and the epidemic data is incomplete.…”

“…phagocytophilum is the causative agent of granulocytic anaplasmosis in various mammals, including humans (Keysary et al 2007). Growing attention has been given worldwide to this pathogenic agent since the first report of human granulocytic anaplasmosis was recorded in the USA (Sheng-Min et al 1994).…”

“…Ixodes ricinus is considered to be the major vector throughout the Europe (Parola and Raoult 2001). Nevertheless, ticks of genera Rhipicephalus, Hyalomma, and Haemaphysalis are also involved in transmission in the East Mediterranean area (Keysary et al 2007;Psaroulaki et al 2008).…”

“…The disease has been reported with increasing frequency in the United States and several European and Asian countries since the first case was reported in the United States in 1994 (3,7,9,12,15,18). A. phagocytophilum DNA has been detected in ticks collected in Israel, Japan, China, and elsewhere (8,14,16). HGA was first reported in China in 2008, and the first HGA outbreak was noteworthy because it caused nosocomial infection (20).…”
