Molecular Evidence of Perinatal Transmission of Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii and Bartonella henselae to a Child

Abstract: Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii , Bartonella henselae , or DNA of both organisms was amplified and sequenced from blood, enrichment blood cultures, or autopsy tissues from four family members. Historical and microbiological results support perinatal transmission of Bartonella species in this family. It is of clinical relevance that Bartonella spp. may adversely influence human reproductive performa… Show more

“…Previously, we reported the lack of a detectable IFA antibody response in patients infected with B. vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii and B. henselae (4,5). It is also not unusual in our experience for a seronegative patient to become seroreactive to Bartonella sp.…”

“…In addition, family clusters involving two or more patients infected with the same Bartonella spp. and strains have been recently reported (4,5). Clearly, additional studies are required to better define modes of Bartonella transmission among vectors, animals, and people.…”

“…In this report and other cases reported to date (8)(9)(10)(11)(12), the route(s) of transmission to or among family members remains unclear. The mode(s) of transmission may vary among and within families depending on environmental, social, microbiological, and epidemiological factors.…”

“…In the United States, infections with B. henselae and/or Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii genotype II were documented in two of five (8), four of four (9), and three of three (10) family members, respectively. In Australia, the male partner of a woman who was infected with B. henselae, B. koehlerae, and B. vinsonii subsp.…”

“…8 Regarding other Bartonella spp., to our knowledge, only perinatal transmission of B. vinsonii ssp. berkhoffii and B. henselae has been reported, 17 which strongly suggests vertical transmission. Additionally, it is of note that vertical transmission of members of the Bartonella genus has been observed in naturally infected rodents.…”
