Molecular Functions of Ceruloplasmin in Metabolic Disease Pathology

Abstract: Ceruloplasmin (CP) is a multicopper oxidase and antioxidant that is mainly produced in the liver. CP not only plays a crucial role in the metabolic balance of copper and iron through its oxidase function but also exhibits antioxidant activity. In addition, CP is an acute-phase protein. In addition to being associated with aceruloplasminemia and neurodegenerative diseases such as Wilson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease, CP also plays an important role in metabolic diseases, which are caus… Show more

“…It has six compact domains that can bind to six Cu atoms. Cp carries 40–70% of Cu in plasma and plays important roles in Cu transport, iron (Fe) regulation, free radical scavenging, and antioxidant processes [ 133 ]. Among the numerous NBIA, Aceruloplasminemia has the highest level of iron accumulation and it has the final impact on the liver, pancreas, retina, and many brain regions, including basal ganglia and cortex [ 134 ].…”

“…Human serum albumin is in equilibrium with other copper molecules circulating in the blood. When free molecules in the circulation disrupt this balance, the course of Alzheimer's disease accelerates [44] . As a result of the study, it was revealed that the decrease in the level of Cu metal in the brains of Alzheimer's disease increased the level of nCp‐Cu in the blood of these patients.…”

“…The higher concentration of ceruloplasmin with antioxidant properties in the J&J group, than in the Biomet group, and its positive correlation with chromium ions should be interpreted analogously. On the other hand, ceruloplasmin is also an acute phase protein [ 36 ], so an increase in its concentration may be associated with the occurrence of inflammation. The limitation of this study is the significant difference between the average age of people in the studied groups, which makes it difficult to interpret the markers of oxidative stress and the antioxidant function of the organism.…”
