“…For example, the ability to bind and remove phosphates from river water samples was demonstrated using a MIP ( Figure 1) which exploited the affinity and selectivity of thiourea-based functional monomers for phosphate moieties (Kugimiya and Takei, 2006;Kugimiya and Takei, 2008). However, neither this, nor other MIP based receptors that bind phosphate groups, have been integrated with a transducer to produce a sensor capable of measuring phosphate in wastewater samples (Sasaki et al, 1998;Wulff et al, 2006;Emgenbroich et al, 2008 andCutivet et al, 2009).…”

“…Silica has been used as the imprinting matrix for the imprinting of inorganic ions 7 and organic molecules. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] Thereby, either the bulk material can be imprinted by the sol-gel method, thus creating microporous materials with specifically arranged functional groups, 7,30,34,35 or an imprinted polysiloxane layer is deposited on the silica surface. 29,33,[36][37][38] Another material that has been imprinted using the sol-gel technique is titanium oxide.…”

“…Sol-gel is a general way to create two groups of organic-inorganic substrates; hybrids of materials by weak interaction among organic and inorganic components (group I) or strong covalent binding with a siloxane matrix (group II) as shown in Figure 1 [18]. In a pioneering study by the Shea group, MIP were prepared by the sol-gel method for extraction of phosphates and phosphonates from aqueous samples and it was a great starting point for further developments in this field [20]. In this review we briefly cover the most recent MIP-sol-gel (MSG) preparation methods and their applications in extraction and microextraction studies.…”
