“…There are different opinions based on morphological data [ 12 , 13 , 14 ], and later, molecular data makes these opinions more controversial [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. In addition, phylogenetic relations within Plecoptera, such as, Styloperlidae, Peltoperlidae, Chloroperlidae, Perlidae, and Perlodidae was controversial [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Currently, the position of Pteronarcyidae, Styloperlidae, and Peltoperlidae in Pteronarcyoidea has been resolved based on morphology [ 19 ], and our previous study that analyzed the family-level phylogenetic of the Pteronarcyoidea supported the traditional morphology-based classification [ 22 ].…”

“…Coincidentally, the position of Chloroperlidae, Perlidae, and Perlodidae was proposed based on morphological data [ 26 , 27 ], but more conflicting opinions were raised after molecular data became available. For example, most studies supported Chloroperlidae and Pteronarcyidae as a sister-group [ 20 , 21 , 24 , 25 , 28 , 29 , 30 ]. Up to now, only one chloroperlid species, Sweltsa longistyla was sequenced [ 31 ], and those conflicting opinions were mainly generated by the limited mitogenomic data.…”

“…We used the best-fit partitioning scheme and partition-specific models recommended by PartitionFinder (Lanfear et al 2012). Two phylogenetic analyses yielded the same topology, and nodal supporting values were always higher for BI trees than for ML trees, which was often the case in previous studies of many other taxa (Yuan et al 2016;Chen et al 2018). Our analyses showed that species of three subfamilies were clustered as three monophyletic groups.…”

“…Peltoperlidae is one of the smallest families of Plecoptera with approximately 50 species divided between the nearctic, palearctic, and oriental regions (DeWalt et al 2019). Currently, the position of Pteronarcyidae, Styloperlidae, and Peltoperlidae in Pteronarcyoidea has been resolved based on morphology (Zwick 2000), but several different suggestions were proposed based on molecular data (Terry and Whiting 2003;Chen & Du 2017;Chen et al 2018), and the relationship within the Pteronarcyoidea still lacks precise phylogeny. In this study, the specimen of P. cebuano was collected from Sabah, Malasia by Jianyun Wang in 2015.…”
