Molecular Profile of Sensitization to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus Dust Mite in Portugal

Abstract: Objective: to analyze component resolved diagnosis to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) in patients with respiratory allergy and its relationship with clinical severity in different geographical areas. Methods: 217patients (mean age 25.85±12.7 years; 51.16% females) were included, selected from 13 centers in Portugal (5 from North, n=65). All had allergic rhinitis, with or without asthma, and had positive skin prick tests to at least one dust mite.Specific IgE (sIgE) to Der p, Dermatophagoides farinae, Le… Show more

“…Even though sIgE-array platforms have included a wide spectrum of HDM allergens (8,14), only Der p 1, Der p 2, Der p 23, and Der p 10 (tropomyosin) are currently available for the component-resolved diagnosis of HDM allergy on ImmunoCAP. Our results, using InmunoCAP in the largest sample published to date, are similar to those previously reported in terms of prevalence of sensitization (6,8,14,15,17) but we report a high rate of monosensitization to Der p 23 (6,8,(15)(16)(17)(18)20,21). The clinical relevance of Der p 23 is only partially defined, and the prevalence and relevance of the exclusive sensitization to it has received little attention so far.…”

“…House dust mites (HDM) are a major cause of respiratory allergy and of perennial asthma worldwide. Der p 23, a gut-derived peritrophin present in the outer membrane of mite feces, has been recognized as a major allergen (3,8,15,16,(17)(18)(19)(20).…”

“…House dust mites (HDM) are an important source of perennial allergens that play a key role in the development of high-impact allergic diseases such as rhinitis and allergic asthma (RA, AA) or atopic dermatitis (AD) that have a great impact on quality of life and associated healthcare costs [1][2][3]. HDM allergens are very powerful and act by activating both adaptive and innate immune systems, so controlling their exposure is a challenge [4].…”

“…Geographic heterogeneity indicates the need for greater standardization in epidemiological research since exposure to allergens depends on multiple factors such as climate and mite microhabitats within the domestic environment. Humidity is a critical factor for its development [2]. The adaptive propagation of HDM suggests that it thrives in the life conditions preferred by humans [4].…”
