Abstract. A critical review of characters used in the systematics of the Brassicaceae is given, and aspects of the origin, classification, and generic delimitation of the family discussed. Molecular phylogenetic studies of the family were reviewed, and major clades identified. Based on molecular studies, especially from the ndhF chloroplast gene, and careful evaluation of morphology and generic circumscriptions, a new tribal alignment of the Brassicaceae is proposed. In all, 25 tribes are recognized, of which seven (Aethionemeae, Boechereae, Descurainieae, Eutremeae, Halimolobeae, Noccaeeae, and Smelowskieae) are described as new. For each tribe, the center(s) of distribution, morphology, and number of taxa are given. Of the 338 genera currently recognized in the Brassicaceae, about 260 genera (or about 77%) were either assigned or tentatively assigned to the 25 tribes. Some problems relating to various genera and tribes are discussed, and future research developments are briefly covered.

Evolution in the genus Pratia (Campanulaceae) has been studied using a variety of techniques. The distribution of chromosome races in P. angulata has been plotted and results suggest that although they generally occupy different geographic areas there are large areas of overlap. No consistent morphological differences were found between these chromosome races. The existence of hybrids between P. angulata and P. perpusilla with 1 1x and 13x chromosome numbers has been established using genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis suggests several independent origins for these hybrids. Artificial hybridization studies showed a high degree of compatibility in almost all the combinations that were attempted. DNA sequences derived from both the nuclear genome (internal transcribed spacer of the rDNA locus, ITS) and chloroplast genomes (trnL intron and trnL-trnF spacer) were used to construct phylogenies. Colensoaphysaloides has been shown to be distinct from the New Zealand species of Pratia and was used as an outgroup to root the phylogenetic trees. A significant finding is that P. macrodon is sister to the other New Zealand species. The nature, value and relative importance of different lines of evidence for deciding the circumscription and rank of genera are examined and discussed. First, I argue that the circumscriptions of genera (and higher taxa) should always be monophyletic, preferably with strong support from independent evidence. Second, the rank of genus is decided on more subjective grounds, but several criteria are helpful: phylogeny should be recoverable from the classification hierarchy, genera should be distinctive, ranks should not be redundant and familiar names should be retained if other criteria are met. I then apply these criteria to an evaluation of the circumscription and rank of 59 New Zealand endemic genera of seed plants accepted in two recent checklists. Fifteen genera (25.4%) were rejected and 16 (27.1%) are considered equivocal. However, my lower estimate almost certainly underestimates endemism at genus rank because the circumscriptions of several genera not evaluated here, such as Pachycladon, could change in the future to become endemic. One new combination is made: Sonchus novae-zelandiae (Hook.f.) Garn.-Jones, although work in progress by others is likely to lead to several more.
